    This article explores satisfactory learning experiences of adult learners in Flemish formal adult education. Satisfaction is an important issue in motivational psychology. We used the Comprehensive Lifelong Learning Participation Model of Boeren, Nicaise and Baert and explored whether satisfactory experiences relate to characteristics of the individual and/or characteristics of the educational institution.     Theoretical models of participation in adult education:The need for an integrated model

    The European Union has set a goal that by 2010, 12.5% of the working age population should be taking part in lifelong learning. This participation rate has not yet been achieved in many countries. A partial explanation is the fact that the decision to participate depends on a variety of factors at three levels: the individual; the educational provisions; and the socio‐economic context, including the regulating authorities. The authors of this article provide insights into the matching process in the educational market, discussing the relevant literature on this issue, including the modelling used in the research literature. In the final section of the article, the authors present an outline of an integrated model of participation in adult education, aimed at creating a better understanding of the complexity of participation and the factors that affect the three levels of the educational market

    Localization effects in a periodic quantum graph with magnetic field and spin-orbit interaction

    A general technique for the study of embedded quantum graphs with magnetic fields and spin-orbit interaction is presented. The analysis is used to understand the contribution of Rashba constant to the extreme localization induced by magnetic field in the T3 shaped quantum graph. We show that this effect is destroyed at generic values of the Rashba constant. On the other hand, for certain combinations of the Rashba constant and the magnetic parameters another series of infinitely degenerate eigenvalues appears.Comment: 25 pages, typos corrected, references extende

    Participation in adult education is today generally considered an individual responsibility. However, participation is the result of a complex bounded agency between individuals, educational institutions and regulating governments. This paper explores the motives of 12,000 European adult learners in formal adult education in 12 European countries. Analysis shows consistent patterns comparable to welfare state typologies.     X-Ray Microanalysis of Calcium Containing Organelles in Resin Embedded Tissue

    The localization of calcium in cell organelles at the electron microscope level is often achieved through cytochemical techniques, and verified by X-ray microanalysis. Various methods have been used to cytochemically detect calcium or calcium-binding sites : calcium loading, calcium substitution by strontium, barium, or even lead, and calcium precipitation by oxalate, phosphate, fluoride, or pyroantimonate. Their results may have heuristic value, particularly in preliminary studies of poorly known cell types. A complementary and more physiological approach is offered by quantitative measurement of the total calcium content of organelles after cryofixation. Resin embedding is less demanding than cryomicrotomy and gives better images : it can be used after cryosubstitution in the presence of oxalic acid.     Well-Posedness and Symmetries of Strongly Coupled Network Equations

    We consider a diffusion process on the edges of a finite network and allow for feedback effects between different, possibly non-adjacent edges. This generalizes the setting that is common in the literature, where the only considered interactions take place at the boundary, i. e., in the nodes of the network. We discuss well-posedness of the associated initial value problem as well as contractivity and positivity properties of its solutions. Finally, we discuss qualitative properties that can be formulated in terms of invariance of linear subspaces of the state space, i. e., of symmetries of the associated physical system. Applications to a neurobiological model as well as to a system of linear Schroedinger equations on a quantum graph are discussed.Comment: 25 pages. Corrected typos and minor change

    Steerable3D: An ImageJ plugin for neurovascular enhancement in 3-D segmentation

    PurposeImage processing plays a fundamental role in the study of central nervous system, for example in the analysis of the vascular network in neurodegenerative diseases. Synchrotron X-ray Phase-contrast micro-Tomography (SXPCT) is a very attractive method to study weakly absorbing samples and features, such as the vascular network in the spinal cord (SC). However, the identification and segmentation of vascular structures in SXPCT images is seriously hampered by the presence of image noise and strong contrast inhomogeneities, due to the sensitivity of the technique to small electronic density variations. In order to help with these tasks, we implemented a user-friendly ImageJ plugin based on a 3D Gaussian steerable filter, tuned up for the enhancement of tubular structures in SXPCT images.MethodsThe developed 3D Gaussian steerable filter plugin for ImageJ is based on the steerability properties of Gaussian derivatives. We applied it to SXPCT images of ex-vivo mouse SCs acquired at different experimental conditions.ResultsThe filter response shows a strong amplification of the source image contrast-to-background ratio (CBR), independently of structures orientation. We found that after the filter application, the CBR ratio increases by a factor ranging from ~6 to ~60. In addition, we also observed an increase of 35% of the contrast to noise ratio in the case of injured mouse SC.ConclusionThe developed tool can generally facilitate the detection/segmentation of capillaries, veins and arteries that were not clearly observable in non-filtered SXPCT images. Its systematic application could allow obtaining quantitative information from pre-clinical and clinical images
